Rose Corral Diaz

Diaz, Rose C. “Rosie”, 78, passed away peacefully on July 21, 2014. In Havana Cuba, Rose was born to Miguel Corral and Mina Dosal on February 6, 1936 and came to Tampa in 1947. She attended Villa Madonna and Sacred Heart Academy and later graduated from Hillsborough County Adult Education as Salutatorian and earned her Masters of Education from the University of Tampa. Rose worked in education close to 50 years where she started her voyage at the Academy of the Holy Names and continued to touch countless lives at West Tampa Junior High, Webb Middle School, and Hillsborough High School. From 1984 to 2003 she became an innovator of Adult Education, working as Administrator and Assistant Principal at Jefferson Adult and Community School, East Bay Adult and Community School and finally Tampa Bay Technical Center. Her achievements and awards were widespread and included the Hillsborough County Outstanding Educator of the Year, Tampa Hispanic Heritage Woman of the Year, ACE of Florida Educator of the Year, Excellence in Education Ida S. Baker Diversity Educator of the Year and the Hillsborough County Volleyball Association Rose Diaz Award, which is presented yearly to an outstanding female volleyball player. Finally after years of pioneering educational movements in Hillsborough County, her many accomplishments as a Hispanic educator were recognized when she was named 2005 Tampa Hispanic Educator of the Year. Rose is survived by her brother Miguel Corral of France, Christina Corral of Mexico and Carmen Corral de Lastra of Mexico, her friend and companion LaVonne “Shawn” Roenstad, son Delvis H. Diaz (Diana), Dania Diaz-Brooks (Gaspar) and Druci Diaz (Thomas) and six grandchildren, James L. Ware, III, Christopher C. Diaz, Wm. R. “Ricky” Phelps, III, Curtis W. Diaz, Katie D.Diaz and Emiliana Rose Kliebert. She has one great grandchild, Kaedyn Ansley Rayl Ware. Our family would like to thank the many friends and colleagues who assisted Rose during her lifetime and shared her vision and initiatives while she maintained the stance “You need to bloom where you’re planted.” A special thanks to our lifetime family friend Martha Finley, The Academy of the Holy Names, Hillsborough County Public Schools, Sun City Senior Living Facility and Father John Kaack.
