Susan "Sue" Dickenshied Detweiler

A celebration of life for longtime Apollo Beach resident Susan “Sue” Dickenshied Detweiler will be held Saturday, May 4, 2019, at 10 a.m. at St. John the Divine Episcopal Church, 1015 Del Webb Blvd. E., in Sun City Center. Sue passed away peacefully on April 12, 2019, at home in Sun City Center. She was born in Pontiac, Mich., on June 13, 1950. She attended Seaholm High School in Birmingham, Mich., and Michigan State University where she studied anthropology and was a member of Chi Omega Sorority. After her marriage to Dr. Edwin “Tex” Detweiler, she helped her husband set up and run his family medical practice and raised her two sons, Dr. Edwin “Boomer” Detweiler III of Apollo Beach and Richard Travis Detweiler of Tampa. The Detweiler family shared many wonderful adventures with family and friends including sking, fishing and boating trips and weekend and summer getaways on their boat and at their summer home in Avalon, N.J. While her sons were growing up, Sue’s kitchen was always open to all of the their many friends for a quick snack or meal. In 1995 the family moved from Cedars, Pa., to Apollo Beach where Sue embarked on a successful career as a realtor, working at Plevel and Weichert realty companies. Throughout her life, Sue was a loving caregiver. She gave generously of her time to family and friends as well as organizations including Germantown Academy in Pennsylvania, which her sons attended; P.E.O. Chapter AM in Tampa and P.E.O. Chapter II in Apollo Beach, of which she was a founding member; and St. John the Divine Episcopal Church in Sun City Center, where she volunteered. She was also a member of the Apollo Beach Women's Club. Sue’s immediate family always remained her pride and joy. In addition to her sons, Sue will be missed dearly by her mother Martha “Petey” Dickenshied of Sun City Center, sister Carol “Punky” Martin of Baltimore, Md., and daughter-in-law Amy Dupree Detweiler, and grandchildren Tanner and Taylor, all of Apollo Beach. She was preceded in death by her husband “Tex” Detweiler, brother Mark Dickenshied, and father Richard Dickenshied. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the St. John the Divine Building Fund in Sun City Center.
