William Ernest Self, 84 years old, went to his eternal home on Monday, March 7, 2016, at Life Path Hospice in Sun City Center, Florida. He was born on February 1, 1932, in Toledo, Ohio, to William Martin and Margaret Murea (Frye) Self. Bill (William) grew up in Toledo, Ohio. He graduated from Scott High School in Toledo, Ohio. After high school he • Attended college at Piedmont Bible College in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, where he received a Bachelor in Theology from 1950-1954 • After college, he started a church in East Toledo, Ohio, Pastoring for 7 years • Completed in 1969 at Bowling Green State University, in Ohio, Major – Rehabilitation Counseling • Completed in 1975 at DePaul University Short Team courses & Intensive Course - Certificate Management Vocational Rehabilitation Services - Certified Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor – Committee on Rehabilitation Counselor Certification Some of Bill’s occupations included o L.O.F. Glass Co. – 2 ½ years o Kaiser Jeep Co. – 1 ½ years o Retail Sales – 3 ½ years o Direct Sales 13 years o 1971 – 1973 Part –Time Professor at Bowling Green State University; Taught Graduate and undergraduate courses on Sheltered Workshops o September, 1965 to 1977 - Board of Mental Retardation - Lucas County - Director of Adult Programs o 1978 till he retired – Vocational Guidance and Rehabilitation Services Cleveland, OH - received the “Outstanding Vocational Rehabilitation Award” in 1989 • He was a member of the following organizations o National Rehabilitation Association o National Rehabilitation Counselor Association o Association Rehabilitation Facilities (Past President) o Professional Association for Retarded Adult Services Division (Past President) Over the last 8 years, Bill was happily married to Ann, where they enjoyed living over the last several years at Freedom Plaza in Sun City Center, Florida. They loved plays, musicals, hockey, church concerts, puzzles, games and spending time together. Bill attended United Methodist Church, Sun City Center, Florida, also spent many years attending First Baptist Church, Ruskin, Florida. He retained his membership at Ashland Avenue Baptist Church in Oregon (formerly in Toledo) Ohio. He enjoyed hockey and was a season ticket holder of the Tampa Bay Lightning. Bill is survived by his spouse, Ann of Sun City Center, FL; his sons/daughters Pastor William & Cassandra (DeBrosse) Self, Holland, OH, Daniel & Paula (Dersham) Self, Charlotte, NC, Michael & Judith (Langley) Self, Ruskin, FL, Carole (Self) & Craig Ringle, Maumee, OH, Steve & Katrina Keith, Toledo, OH, Mike Keith, Delphos, OH, Renee (Keith) Wayton, Toledo, OH, Todd & Vickie (Thebeau) Keith, Sylvania, OH, Brad & Amy Self, Waterville, OH, Pastor Clayton Self, Seattle, WA, Michelle (Self) & Ed Shortridge, Madison, OH. His sisters, Doris Ashenfelter, Deceased, Alice & Ted Davidson, Arcadia, FL; He has 27 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews and other relatives. A special thank you to Life Path Hospice and all the wonderful nurses and aids. Also to two pastors who stood with him and the family, Pastor Julian Graham, United Methodist Church, Sun City Center, FL, and Pastor Jim Farr, First Baptist Church, Ruskin, FL. A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 25, 2016 in Toledo, Ohio.
