Obituary

Alice Josephine Quaal was born March 30, 1912, in Bromhead, Saskatchewan, Canada, to Olaf and Sophie (Lund) Kleven. She was baptized in Canada and moved to rural Madison as a young child. She was confirmed at Hegre Lutheran Church and attended country school through the eighth grade. She grew up on the family farm and worked as a waitress at a café in Madison. On June 20, 1937, she married Gilman M. Quaal at Hegre Lutheran Church, rural Madison. Their first year of marriage found them farming north of Milan. They then moved to Cerro Gordo Township where they farmed until retiring in 1974. They spent their retirement years in Appleton. Alice was a long time member of Lac qui Parle Lutheran Church. She enjoyed playing piano for the ladies id, choir, and ladies quartet. She also played piano for the country school Christmas programs. Alice was a busy farmwife and guided her children through church activities, 4-H, and school life. She enjoyed gardening, her flowers and lawn, sewing, embroidering, crocheting, and quilting. They enjoyed retirement living by fishing, camping, keeping up with their grandchildren, and wintering in Texas for 18 years. They spent six years as residents of Pleasant View and enjoyed playing cards and social activities with family and friends. Due to health reasons, Alice entered the nursing home in February, 2000 and enjoyed special visits from her family. Alice died on Saturday evening, January 24th, at Appleton Area Health Services-Nursing Home. She had attained 96 years, 9 months, and 23 days of age. She is survived by three children: Gordon (Nancy) Quaal of rural Dawson and San Diego, CA, Sandra (Chuck) Tatge of Appleton, and Audrey (Pierre) Forrette of Brandon, SD; four grandchildren: Marcia (Brad) Wehe, Mark Cairns (fiancée Tina Matter), Chad (Annette) Henslin, and Melanie Cairns (special friend Duncan McDonald); five great-grandchildren: Kelsey, Karlee and Matthew Wehe, Carter Henslin, and Alexander McDonald; 11 step-grandchildren; 24 step-great-grandchildren; sister, Glenda Boraas, of Madison; three sisters-in-law: Mildred Kleven of Minneapolis, Onalee Kleven of Benson, and Irene Quaal of Forest Lake; brother-in-law, Milburn Quaal, of Bloomington; several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
