Bernice Lois Ascheman, Clontarf, passed away suddenly at the age 80 on March 10th at Swift County Benson Hospital. Bernice was born October 8th, 1931, in Dupree, South Dakota, the second child of Stanley and Clara (Radke) Sherman. During the great depression the family relocated to southeastern Minnesota, living first with Clara's parents in Lakefield and then Brewster. At the age of 6, the family moved again to a farm in Benson, MN, where she attended country school and Benson schools. After leaving school, she worked as a waitress. For a short time she returned to southeastern Minnesota, rooming in Worthington while working at Woolworth's. In the summer of '46 a double date introduced the Sherman girls to two of the Ascheman brothers. On November 3, 1949, Bernice and Floyd Edward Ascheman were married at the Clontarf church, joining the two families in marriage for a second time. They lived in Brooten and Benson. In the winter of 1951 the couple's first child was born, Ray Edward. Three years later they were blessed again with a baby girl, Debra Diane. In 1955, the young family moved to a farm in Clontarf. The family sold the farm and headed South in the winter of 1962, settling on a dairy farm in Redfield, Kansas. They returned home to family and friends three years later and bought a farm on Highway 59 in Hancock, MN. In 1969, the family was happily surprised by the birth of Sandy Kaye. They moved off the farm in 1981 and built a home 2 miles north of Clontarf on land the couple had purchased in the late 50s; they continued to farm while semiretired. In 1987, Bernice went back to work at Future Products in Benson. In 1998, Floyd passed away. She retired in 2000, spending her days with her sister Evelyn and their friends having coffee parties, playing cards, visiting with friends at Burger King and taking trips to the casino. She always put others first and was most happy when surrounded by her family. She enjoyed hosting Sunday dinners and 4th of July celebrations where she would serve her fried chicken. Her grandchildren loved coming to grandma's house and she cherished them; always treating them with bakery goodies, lunches in town and sweet treats. She proudly attended their school activities and watched their sporting events. When asked what her greatest achievement was, her answer was her family. She was a supportive and compassionate mother, grandmother, sister and aunt who was loved by all and will be dearly missed She is survived by her sister and best friend, Evelyn Ascheman (Benson, MN), her children, Ray (Glenda) Ascheman (Elbow Lake, MN), Debbie (Pete) Andrews (Savage, MN), Sandy (Steve) DeVaan (DeGraff, MN), her grandchildren, Michele (Mark) Plumhoff, Angela (Ted) Meyer, Billy Ray (Lisa) Ascheman, Kacie (Jordan) Andrews, Erin (Rob) Andrews, Danny Andrews, Teddy DeVaan, Brooke (Nick) Dahl and Jalynn DeVaan, 8 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grand child, her 'other children' Ronnie, Wayne, Dan and Carlene and many other nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was proceeded in death by her, her parents Stanley and Clara, her husband Floyd Ascheman, her brother Noble Sherman, an infant sister Mavis Sherman and her grandson Cody DeVaan.
