Obituary

Snyder, Charles Eugene "Gene" 78, of Apollo Beach and Madison, Florida died Sunday, July 15, 2012 at home after a long battle with heart disease. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife of 58 years, Patricia; daughters Michele (Christian) Mosesman and Deborah Reynolds; grandchildren Rhiannon Snyder, John Geiger (Fiance Alyshy Silva), Mark (Darla) Geiger, Summer Geiger, Crystal (Truett) Bishop; 6 grandchildren; two brothers, Richard Snyder and Kenneth Snyder; and best friends of 53 years, Herb and Etta Cuccuini. He was Born in Portsmouth, Ohio July 5, 1934 to the late Charles and Stella Snyder. He was preceded in death by his only son, John Lawrence Snyder. He enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1951 during the Korean War. In 1961 he was selected for Officer Candidate School and commissioned a 2nd Lt. On July 15, 1963, he was selected from the 1st one year group ever considered for a Regular Commission. While actively serving he received his Master of Science Degree from the University of Colorado in 1967. Upon graduation he was assigned to HQ Command, USAF, Bolling AFB as Chief, Personnel Inspection Branch. From 1970 to 1973 he was Commander, 1st USAF Special Activities SQ, NASA Johnson Spacecraft Center, Houston, TX. His Final position was Chief of Administration, Ramstein Air Base, Germany. With many awards/medals, he cherished most was the Bronze Star Medal for his Meritorious Service, 1965/66 in Vietnam. He retired August 1, 1975 as a Major, having served 24 honorable years in the USAF. After retirement he and Patricia enjoyed cruising and traveling the world—many times with their children. As a retired Regular Air Force Officer, he was especially proud to have given the Oath of Office to his daughter, Michele (Ret. USAF) and grandsons John (US Army) and Mark (US Navy). Family and friends knew his love and compassion was unconditional, he treated all with respect. To the end he personified that old phrase: An Officer and a Gentleman. He completed his mission here on earth and now rests in peace with his son John. With a warm smile and a twinkle in his blue eyes, he looked down upon us. Family and close friends will hold a Celebration of Life. Cremains will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors in accordance with his final wishes.
