Obituary for David Lytton Baker
Beloved Husband, Father, Son, Brother, Mentor, and Friend
David Lytton Baker, 65, of Bartow, Florida, passed away peacefully on July 23, 2025, after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease. He faced his illness with grace and a smile that continued to reflect his love for God and for those around him—even when words failed.
David was born in Evansville, IN. He grew up in Odon, IN and moved to Florida in 1986 with his wife, Cindy, and son, Andy. He had a spark of adventure and a heart for people. He was fun-loving and kind, a natural encourager with a gift for vision and motivation. A man of deep faith in Jesus Christ, David lived out his beliefs in action and service, serving faithfully as an elder in his church over the years.
He joined Northwestern Mutual Financial Network in 1997 as a financial representative and later became a Managing Director overseeing a firm in Lakeland, FL. David loved working with people, especially new representatives just beginning their careers. His gift for teaching and mentoring left a lasting legacy in the lives of many, as he helped others grow not only in business but in faith and character. He retired in May of 2022.
David was also passionate about sports, especially those that involved the water. He taught himself to barefoot waterski and never turned down the chance to spend time boating, skiing, swimming, or simply relaxing on a beach. Golf was another joy of his, and he cherished time outdoors and in friendly competition with family and friends. A lifelong lover of music, David could often be found enjoying reggae, country, or trop rock, especially the songs of Jimmy Buffett.
David leaves behind his loving wife, Cindy, who walked faithfully by his side through every joy and every trial. He is survived by his beloved son, David Andrew (Andy) Baker, and daughter-in-law Christina of Lakeland. He is also survived by his mother, Sharon Baker of Lakeland; his sisters, Jennifer Thompson of Lakeland and Jean Anne Baker (Ivy Menken) of Port St. Lucie; his nieces, Brooke Leavitt (Nate) and their son Layton of Lakeland, and Allie Thompson of Tampa; and his aunt, Mary Lee Fankhauser of Winter Haven, and many loving, caring cousins. He is preceded in death by his father, Dr. James E. Baker.
David's greatest joy was time with family and friends—on the water, around the table, playing cards, or simply gathered in laughter. Even in the final season of his life, when primary progressive aphasia robbed him of speech, David still spoke volumes through his touch, his contagious smile, and his enduring presence. His quiet strength and unwavering faith leave a void that cannot be filled but a legacy that will never fade.
Though Alzheimer's took his words, it never took his spirit. David taught us how to live fully, love deeply, and finish faithfully. He will be missed beyond measure and remembered with love forever. Now, he is free—no longer bound by illness or frustration—and we imagine him enjoying a favorite rum drink on a beach somewhere, listening to music and soaking in the peace he so richly deserves.
A celebration of David's life will be held at Access Church, 915 S. Broadway Ave., Bartow, FL, 33830, on Friday, August 22, at 2:00 PM. Beach casual or golf attire is encouraged.
A private service will follow in Rotonda West on Saturday, August 23.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Teal Team, Chapters Health Affiliate, Life Path Hospice, 12470 Telecom Dr., Ste. 400, Temple Terrace, FL 33637
