Obituary

Donna Lu Brandstein peacefully died at her home in Sun City Center, Florida on July 6, 2010 after a 10 month battle with cancer. Donna was a devoted wife, sister, and mother. Mrs. Brandstein was known as Mrs. B. to her many students at Woodbridge Middle School. She was a devoted teacher who never wanted to leave the classroom where she felt that she could contribute the most to students. Donna Lu Shapiro was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on September 7, 1942 and was the third daughter born to Leo I. Shapiro Esq. and Dr. Charlotte Heller Shapiro. She married her fellow Minnowbrook camp counselor Alfred G. Brandstein in 1962. They and their three children moved to Virginia in 1971 when Dr. Brandstein began work at the Harry Diamond Laboratories in Woodbridge. In 2005, Donna and Alfred moved to Sun City Center. Donna loved reading, gardening, and music. She was an accomplished flutist. Her greatest joys were her seven grandchildren with whom she enjoyed dancing, singing, reading, and laughing. Survivors include her beloved husband of 48 years, Dr. Alfred G. Brandstein, son Dr. Michael S. Brandstein of Acton MA, (Karen Brandstein), two daughters, Hali J. Farrell of Lake Ridge, VA and Marcy J. Leamy of Atlanta, Georgia (Dr. Michael J. Leamy), seven grandchildren Gennifer, Adam and Benjamin Farrell, Leah and Jonah Brandstein, and Maxwell and Charlotte Leamy. She is also survived by two sisters, Dr. Carol Shapiro of Woodbridge, VA and Dr. Ilene Kurfeerst of Pittsburgh, PA. Donna Lu will be cremated. The family will hold a memorial celebration of life service for her in Virginia on Labor Day weekend in honor of her birthday.
