Dr. Detweiler passed away peacefully on Jan. 18, 2018. He was born in Pasadena, Texas, on March 29, 1946, and was a dedicated physician, husband, father and grandfather.
He is survived by his loving wife Susan Dickenshied Detweiler, sons Dr. Edwin "Boomer" Detweiler III and Richard Travis Detweiler, and daughter-in-law Amy Dupree Detweiler. Even while he was hospitalized, "Tex" was a proud grandfather who never failed to ask about his two grandchildren whom he adored, Tanner and Taylor. In addition to his immediate family, he also is survived by siblings Ann Fogel, Mary Jo Schulze, Dr. Thomas C. Detweiler and Dr. Robert Detweiler.
Known by friends and family as "Tex," he was raised in Lansdale, Pennsylvania, where he attended Lansdale Catholic High School. He then was accepted into Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and earned his degree in osteopathic medicine. He began his professional life by opening a family practice medical clinic in Lansdale.
He and his family moved from Cedars, Pennsylvania, to Apollo Beach in 1995. He last worked for the Physicians Group LLC of Sarasota.
An avid sportsman, "Tex" was recognized as a pioneer in the sport of scuba diving and earned advanced qualifications as an instructor. He shared his lifelong passions for offshore fishing, boating, hunting and skiing with his sons Boomer and Travis, who will always have fond memories of time spent outdoors with their father. He also was an accomplished small plane pilot who liked nothing better than flying to a favorite lunch spot with his wife Sue or captaining his boat for a day of offshore fishing with his sons. He was a longtime member of the Shiloh-MacCalla Lodge No. 558 of Souderton, Pennsylvania, and was a proud recipient of the prestigious Boy Scouts of America Eagle Scout award, which he earned before graduating high school.
