Gene Michael Wendland (Joe), 86, of Sun City Center, passed away peacefully on August 27, 2025, after a long and courageous journey with Parkinson's disease.
He was born in Worthington, Minnesota, to Martin and Rose Wendland. Gene began his career proudly serving in the United States Air Force as an electrician, and later started his own business, Genuine Construction, where he built a reputation for honesty, skill, and hard work.
Gene's life was a story of building—homes, businesses, dreams, and above all, a family. His greatest joy was the life he shared with Virgie, embracing her five daughters as his own and later welcoming a girl and a boy (twins) together. They created a home full of love, laughter, and shared dreams. Their journey carried them from horse shows with their beloved Morgans to summers on Spirit Lake, from boating on the St. Croix River to winters spent golfing and traveling as snowbirds. Through every chapter, Gene remained true to who he was: hardworking, creative, honest, and happiest when side by side with the love of his life.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Brian, and his sisters Kathryn D'avia and Jan McKensie.
He is survived by his loving wife, Virgie Wendland; his children Kim (Dan) Fischer, Dana Knutson, Coco (John) Brietkrietz, Shawn Knutson, Jill (Perry) Hillyer, Scott (Noelle) Wendland, and Kelly (Dan) Shafer; and his faithful companion, Kobie. Gene was the proud grandfather of 12 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
A private celebration of Gene's life will be held with family.
"He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him."
