80, passed into the presence of her Lord and Savior Wednesday, December 3, 2014 in Apollo Beach, Florida while surrounded by her family.
A former resident of Jackson, she was born in Washington, D.C. on October 23, 1934 to the late James Allen DeForce and Virginia Jones Murphey DeForce.
Helen was also preceded in death by her brother, James Allen DeForce, Jr. and sister, Bettye DeForce Krider.
She attended Randolph Macon Woman's College and the University of Mississippi where she was a member of Kappa Delta sorority.
Helen loved her church, First Presbyterian of Jackson, where she was active in the Fellowship Sunday School Class, Choir, and Women in the Church. She volunteered for many organizations that flourished under her leadership, especially the Mississippi State Society Daughters of the American Revolution (MSSDAR) where she served in numerous state offices and as regent of Rebecca Cravat Chapter of Jackson. She was elected Rosalie Chairman and oversaw the Natchez mansion owned and maintained by MSSDAR as well as served on the Rosalie Permanent Advisory Board. Helen was appointed to several NSDAR national committees and enjoyed many years of attending Continental Congress in Washington, D.C.
She was president of Excelsior Women's Club of Jackson, Governor of the MS Society of Mayflower Descendents, a member of the Hinds County Republican Women, Demitasse Luncheon Club, and One O'Clock Luncheon Club. She enjoyed playing Bridge and socializing with the "Coffee Group" at least two or three afternoons a week.
Helen is survived by her husband of 59 years, Richard Lee Buford; daughters, Ginger Buford Kritz (Jeff) of Apollo Beach, FL and Cathy Buford Crick (Jim) of Louisville, KY; grandchildren, Ashley Kritz Diaz (Alvaro), Samantha Kritz, Kristin Crick Gourley (Paul), Jimmy Crick, Kelsey Crick, 4 great-grandchildren; a brother, Smith Murphey DeForce, and her loving caregiver, Liz Rosado.
Interment will be in Holly Springs, MS in a private graveside service.
