Leona Fern Rheingans was born on January 18, 1910, in Appleton, Minnesota, the daughter of James O. and Dora (Cordeman) Harwick. She grew up on a farm just west of Appleton, and attended Appleton Public Schools. In 1928, she took teachers training at the Appleton Normal School. For the next two years, she taught at the District #12 school in Shible Township, Swift County, Minnesota. On June 7, 1931, Leona married Edwin A. Rheingans. They began their farm like along County Road 1, about eight miles northwest of Appleton, where their first challenge was the depression and a drought. Leona enjoyed gardening (including several flower gardens), yard work, being a farmer's wife, going to Women's Fellowship, and her sewing club. Leona was called from this life on Saturday, January 23, 2010 at Appleton Nursing Home. She attained the age of 100 years and 5 days. Leona is survived by her children: Marolyn (Robert) Wesloh of Clarksville, MD and Joan Rheingans of Marshall; two grandchildren: James (Kathy) Wesloh of Columbia, MD and John (Bettina) Wesloh of Eldersburg, MD; three great grandchildren: Daniel, Matthew and Rebecca Wesloh all of Elderburg, MD; and a sister, Opal Nevins of Appleton; and other relatives and friends. Preceding her in death were her husband, Edwin in 1977; her parents, James and Dora; one brother, Earl Hardwick; and three sisters: Edith Carlson, Evelyn Baldwin, and Irene Baldwin.
