Margaret Jean (Hawkins) Whitted, of Brandon, Florida, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Sunday May 25, 2025. She was born in Bedford, Indiana on September 14, 1932, and graduated from Shawswick High School in Lawrence County, Indiana in May of 1950. Margaret married Lawrence Franklin (Pete) Whitted on December 1, 1950, and they were in their seventy fifth year of marriage.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Geoffrey and Edna (Dodds) Hawkins, three siblings, Pauline, James (Jimmy), and Dean. She leaves her husband Pete, her daughter, Julie Atkins (Robert Atkins, M.D.), four grandchildren, Annie (Lilienthal) Mason (Matt), Sasha (Atkins) Voss (Taylor), Casey (Lilienthal) Fenner (Aaron), and Ryland Atkins (Katherine), and three great granddaughters, Dorothy Juniper Hawkins Mason, Kathleen Anne Marie Mason, and Evelyn Taylor Voss.
She worked in Bedford from the 1950's through the 1970's as a bookkeeper for Smith's Jewelers and for Public Service Indiana. She later worked as a legal assistant for Attorney Hugh Banta in Rockville, Indiana and for Attorney Grant Knuckles in Pineville, Kentucky. From 1993 through 2014, she worked as a bookkeeper for Atkins Law Office in Harlan, Kentucky.
Pete and Margaret attended the First Church of the Nazarene in Bedford, Indiana, the Mitchell Church of God in Mitchell, Indiana, the Cumberland Church of the Nazarene, in Cumberland Kentucky, the Church of God in Wimauma, Florida, and the First Christian Church in Ruskin, Florida.
Services will be at 10:00 AM on June 14, 2025 at Cresthaven Memory Gardens in Bedford.
