Obituary

Phyllis June Mellgren was born February 9, 1925 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the daughter of Olger and Cora (Aaberg) Hoium. Phyllis grew up and attended school in the Starbuck and Benson areas. Phyllis was united in marriage to Roy Berkley. On November 15, 1950, she was married to Alfred Mellgren. This union was blessed with three daughters and nearly 48 years of marriage. Phyllis spent her time taking care of the home and children. She was active in the DFL; she worked for the election of Senator and Vice President Humphrey and President John Kennedy. Among the things she enjoyed were music, painting, art, and poetry. She especially loved children and animals. Phyllis was called from this life on Wednesday, May 19, 2010 at Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park. She attained the age of 85 years, 3 months and 10 days. Phyllis is survived by her daughters: Sandra (Howard) Jongeward of Benson, Debra (Doug) Brodil of Apple Valley, and Wendy Lyons of St. Louis Park; 12 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. Preceding her in death were her husband Alfred; and her parents, Olger and Cora, and one sister Marlys Johnson.
