Obituary

Raymond Vincent McKinnon passed away on April 11, 2024, in Sun City Center, Florida. He was born January 31, 1931, to William and Elizabeth (Serroul) MacKinnon in Little Bras d'Or, Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. He was the second youngest of seven children, and the last surviving sibling.

Early in his adult life, Ray served in the United States Army and was a helmsman on the Norman B. Ream on the Great Lakes as part of the Merchant Marines. He was later nationalized as a US citizen.

On September 1, 1958, Ray married the love of his life, Rita Gillis, in New Waterford, Nova Scotia. Before long, life took them to Chicago, Illinois.

In 1961, Ray earned a Bachelor's Degree in Tool Engineering from Allied Institute of Technology in Chicago. He also taught Analytical Geometry there, before moving to Streamwood, Illinois in 1963 where they would raise their family.

Ray's working years revolved around steel fabricating and hot dip galvanizing, owning and operating Rogers Brothers Galvanizing with his family in Rockford, Illinois, for more than 40 years.

Ray enjoyed golf, traveling, and wintering in Florida, all with the friends he made along the way. Ray liked to stay active and see the world.

While he spent most of his retirement split between Byron, Illinois, and Zephyrhills, Florida, he permanently moved to Sun City Center, Florida, in 2018.

Raymond is survived by his children, Judith (Thomas) Ferolie, Michael (Mary) McKinnon, and Lorraine "Rayne" (Barney) Shelburne; grandchildren Melissa, Jason (Katrina), Kelly, Shannon, Megan, Sydney, Sara (fiancé Trae), and Jenna; three great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and special friend, Sandra Fleming.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Rita, longtime companion Archilene Gaziano, siblings Bill, Jim, Archie, Joe, Mary, and Bobby, and great-grandson Edison.
