Obituary

Viola Wilhelmenia Dorothea Munsterman was born on October 29, 1910, in Shible Township, Swift County, to parents Henry and Mary (Schulte) Grages. She was baptized on November 6, 1910, and confirmed on April 13, 1924, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Shible Township. Viola also attended parochial school at Immanuel Lutheran Church. She married Henry Munsterman on October 7, 1931, at Immanuel Lutheran Church. They were blessed with six children: Ardith, Audrey, Roger, twins David and Dennis, and daughter, Viola, who died shortly after birth. They were members of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Shible Township, where all of their children were baptized.Viola was well known for her buggy-wheel rugs and hand-stitched quilts. She was active in Homemakers, Ladies Aid, Choir, taught Sunday school, and did ceramics. She was best known among family, friends, and neighbors for her coffeecake, rolls, and homemade bread. Her coffee pot was always on. She prepared hundreds of meals and lunches for working men of the farm. She enjoyed preparing large holiday meals and using her fine china. Her larder contained homemade sausage, canned beef, horseradish, and preserved garden produce. In fall she "laid-in' large sacks of flour and sugar for the coming winter.After a farm auction they retired to Appleton. She and her husband became famous for the roses they raised. Viola played Bridge, participated in Bible studies, and Guild at Trinity Lutheran Church. She continued to live in their home after Henry's death on September 20, 1991. She later moved to Apple Ridge apartments and the Appleton Nursing Home.Viola died on Saturday evening, October 3, at Appleton Area Health Services. She had attained 98 years, 11 months, and 4 days of age.She is survived by five children: Ardith (Norman) Barge of Parkers Prairie, Audrey (Gordon) Leonard of Greeley, CO, Roger (Peggy) Munsterman of Greeley, CO, David (Lil) Munsterman of Thornton, CO, and Dennis Munsterman of Appleton; 18 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; her sister, Elmira Huseby, of Montevideo; several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Henry; daughter Viola; granddaughter Cheryl; three brothers: Alfred, Harry, and Wilbert Grages; and her sister Lucille Stock.
