William Donovan Shores was born February 18, 1914 in Johnson County, Kansas, the son of Flavel W. and Bertha Pearl (Donovan) Shores. He was baptized in 1924 and confirmed in 1929 at Bethesda Lutheran Church in rural Murdock. He grew up in the Murdock area and attended school at District #75 in Hayes Township. He graduated from Murdock High School. On March 14, 1937, Bill was united in marriage to Lillian Dorothy Rose Levitz in Chippewa County. They were blessed with three children and 71 years of marriage. Lil passed away in 2008. Bill was a lifelong farmer, raising grain and Spotted Poland China hogs. Bill and his brother Vince worked as umpires for the Southwest Umpire Association. He was a charter member of the Hayes Kildare Farmers Union. He served on the boards of the Murdock Farmer's Elevator, Hayes Township, the Murdock School, and the First State Bank of Murdock. He was involved in 4-H leadership and served on the extension committee in Swift County. Bill was a member of Bethesda Lutheran Church and served on the church council there. In 1963, he was awarded the Farmer-Sportsman Award in Swift County for his success in farming, wildlife conservation and forestry practices, soil managements and leadership in improving farmer-sportsmen relations. He served as a Swift County Commissioner from 1960 - 1966 and from 1967-1973 he served as the District 23A State Representative from Kandiyohi and Swift Counties. After his retirement in the mid 1970's, he and Lil spent their winters in Alamo, Texas. Among the things he enjoyed were dancing, hunting, fishing, playing cards, rolling dice, and being with his family. Bill was called from this life on Monday, December 28, 2009 at Bethesda Heritage Center in Willmar. He attained the age of 95 years, 10 months and 10 days. Bill is survived by his children: Stephen (Darleen) Shores of Murdock, Stan (Carol) Shores of Sun Lakes, AZ, and Jan (Gary) Bjorngjeld of Murdock; seven grandchildren: Bryan Shores, Wade Shores, Mark Shores, Derek Shores, Adam Bjorngjeld, Sarah Wennerberg, and Leah Claussen; seven great grandchildren: Emma Shores, Olivia Shores, Sophie Shores, Ava Bjorngjeld, Cora Bjorngjeld, Jack Wennerberg and Claire Wennerberg; sisters-in-law, Beatrice Magnuson of New London and Phyllis Levitz of Maynard; many nieces & nephews; and other relatives and friends. Preceding him in death were his wife Lillian; his parents, Flavel and Pearl; one brother Vince Shores and one sister Mary Jo Franklin.
